And the shortlisting begins

March 10, 2020

The Quantum Shorts flash fiction competition is moving into its next phase. Submissions closed on 29 February 2020, and we have now published to the website all the eligible entries. Writers from all over the world responded to our fiction call and sent in their quantum-inspired stories. We were absolutely blown away. We closed to almost 650 submissions.

Now that the writing is over, we’re handing things over to our shortlisting panel. The members of our shortlisting panel are physicists and communicators from leading quantum research centres around the world. They bring a wealth of experience between them, from expertise in quantum cryptography, to experience in science museums and training in archaeology. You can read more about the panel here. With all the amazing stories submitted this year, we honestly don’t envy the task that awaits them!

The shortlisting panel will judge the submissions based on four criteria: storyline, creative use of the constraint (“things used to be so simple”), link to quantum physics, and quality of writing. Ultimately, they have to choose just ten.

The shortlisted stories will be announced in May.

So the wait begins. In the meantime, we will continue to share the stories of this year’s competition on social media. So follow us on Twitter and Facebook for your daily dose of quantum short stories, and quantum news and happenings. You can also go straight to our website to read them.

To all the wonderful writers who entered Quantum Shorts this round: whether you are an experienced writer or just taking your first step in writing; whether you submitted multiple entries or just one – a big thank you for participating. We have been delighted by the diversity, creativity and charm of your stories and we’re sure that other readers are enjoying your writing too.
